This is effectively the second edition of my MPhil Dissertation. The first edition was produced at the University of Glasgow in 1974. It was typed from a handwritten draft. My copy is a carbon copy of the copy I submitted. It was bound by J.S Heron Ltd., Printers & Bookbinders, 46a W. Princes St, GLASGOW G4 9BQ, 0141-332 1883.

The only major differences between this edition and the original other than the original was on paper and this is electronic, are that the layout style is slightly different, I have added this page, I have replaced page numbers with hypertext links on the contents page and lists of figures, I have added cross reference and other hyperlinks, and I have taken the opportunity to make some spelling and minor grammatical corrections. However in the transcription process some errors may have crept in.
